A physical activity program for multiply impaired children that makes use of water and its natural properties to promote therapeutic goals. The buoyancy and warmth of the water provides a uniquely effective environment to the development of fine and gross motor skills, as well as social, communication, sensory, and cognitive goals.

Hippotherapy
(adapted horseback riding)

A physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy strategy that draws upon the similarity between the natural movement of a horse’s pelvis and that of a human. The activity takes place at a stable designed expressly for disabled children, with certified instructors, professional horse handlers and carefully-trained horses for maximum safety and therapeutic impact.

Community Sports Activities

A team sport designed specifically for the blind, using a ball that contains noise bells and a court that is marked with tactile lengths of twine to assist with player orientation. Goal ball promotes skills that are transferable to activities of daily living, such as spatial orientation, and the use of other senses.

Training for competitive athletic events

Therapists at the MAB-Mackay work with a select group of children to develop specific goals that are incorporated into training for an annual multi-sport competition for disabled athletes each spring. Sports include swimming, track and field, tricycling, rhythmic gymnastics, boccia, and a power wheelchair obstacle course.
